How to take care of frizzy or kinky hair?

A kinky hair is super strong!” “A frizzy hair obviously has no need for masks, it’s already thick enough…”

Well, today Termix debunks misconceptions, as they totally go against all advices for a healthysane hair. Because, actually, frizzy, ethnic and kinky hair are the neediest ones: they demand a special care and constant hydration.

So… should we start telling you the truth about these sensible hair? The French hairstylist Alexis Rosso answered all our questions on the matter.

– INTERVIEW –

1. Is Afro hair this resistant as many people believe so?

Well, first you want to distinguish between frizzyethnic and kinky hair, as they need specific products and care. Actually, the kinky hair is the most fragile of all types, whereas it looks and touches dry and gives a sensation of tough hair. But it has the thinnest cuticle of all.

The toughest hair is the Asian one, then comes the Indian, Caucasian, mixed-hair and finally Afro kinky hair. We often make the wrong diagnosis on kinky hair. It can be as dry as a plant and thus need a good hydrating product with hydrogen molecules.

For years, people have been recommending very greasy products for this kind of hair, but a good, simple hydrating product is actually the basic you’ll need.

2. How to correctly wash these types of hair ?

Frizzy or kinky hair are very far from Caucasian type, which tends to get greasy roots and requires a daily or frequent washing. On the contrary, an Afro hair can be washed once a week at the most, otherwise it’ll dry up!

Then, you’ll need to give them a daily or frequent care, through hydrating lotionsnourishing creams and, once in a while, a special oil. For that last item, the idea is to moist the hair with oil a night before washing it, and rinse it immediately on the next morning. Though this treatment requires a good analysis on your hair, so to be sure it will absorb it right. Thus, you need to know your hair, by touching it and trying products. And it usually takes time to find just the right product, which would explain why kinky-haired women often have dozens of hair products in their bathroom!

3. Is a right hairbrush an essential tool of a daily care routine ?

I did actually tried out the Evolution Soft Termix hairbrush, and it works quite well on frizzy hair. Its soft bristles don’t pull the hair, which makes it an excellent hair tool. For an Afro or kinky hair, though, better use tougher bristles which will perfectly penetrate the hair and untighten it.
Just like the Evolution Basic hairbrush (Editor’s note).

An Afro-compatible comb is also a good hair accessory and a good help for a loose untangling before an American brushing for instance (blow out technique)

4. Ethnic hair relaxing is still a major treatment most people do… Is it dangerous for the hair ?

I was born in this hair world, my mother was a hairdresser, I’ve always seen these treatments performed and I must say I’ve never seen a hair being damaged by a relaxing process. It all depends on the diagnosis before you start.

People might have misused it, years ago, leaving the product on the hair for too long, so that the scalp started to suffer from the chemicals. But when you do it right, with the right diagnosis and the right fitting product, after 20 minutes you just have a perfectly sane hair.

5. Does a relaxed hair need a specific cure after the treatment ?

It needs the same care, with daily hydration and a special attention, as it’s still a brittle hair. Just remember not to apply the same dose of product on a stiff hair, as it will penetrate faster and easier in its smoother structure.

6. How long does a relaxing treatment lasts ?

You’ll have to renew it every 60 days, which means about 2 cm of new grown hair.

7. What would you advise to people with frizzy, ethnic or kinky hair ?

Before all, always ask first for a professional advise. This will be your guide throughout your life, for a perfectly adapted hair care routine.

You can of course follow the inspiring videos of bloggers and influencers, but remember they can only be inspirational. They’ll never replace a full professional diagnosis, which will remind you how fragile your hair actually is and give you a personal orientation.
