Choosing the right hairbrush: which is best for my hair?
How should our brush be? When it comes to brushing the hair, the most important thing is to correctly choose our brush. Because there is tension and hair pulling during the process, one must choose the right brush to avoid the breakage of hair. If you normally spend money on treatments and specific hair products, (shampoos, hair masks, etc) you should also correctly choose your brush so as not to spoil the hair care process. Are you unsure where to start? Here are some tips:
What should you take into account when choosing the brush?
- The material of the brush. Plastic brushes generate static electricity on the hair. That’s why you should better use carbon, titanium, flexible nylon or natural bristle brushes. Natural bristle brushes are good because they have the same surface structure as human hair and they are also specially soft to the root of your hair.
- Its distribution. Observe the brush and avoid closely-spaced brushes as they break the hair. And also avoid the ones which are aggressive to the hair due to its damaging finishing. The natural bristle brushes are the best option because they look after our hair.
- The fibres or bristles. Bear in mind that the thinnier the hair the higher density of fibres or bristles of your brush. If your hair is thicker, then the bristles can be harder and wide-spaced.
When to use one or the other?
- The paddle hairbrush is widely used to straighten the hair. It straightens and makes the hair shine after drying.
- For long hair use brushes with large plastic teeth (like the mixed brush); and for short hair better use the natural boar hairbrush. These brushes massage the scalp while at the same time they distribute the fat across the hair and straighten its surface.
- Brushing the hair after washing will be a totallly different thing. In this case you should better use a wide-spaced bristle brush like the racket brush that avoids the breakage of hair.
The paddle brush
The racket brush or paddle is the perfect tool to untangle both dry and wet hair. It also works well with curly hair. This is thanks to its wide-spaced nylon bristles that reduce the breakage of hair and prevent the frizz. It is also ideal for carrying out a plain brushing, because its flat shape helps us straighten the hair with the use of a hair dryer.
Flat termal hairbrush
This brush belongs to the professional range of brushes and is conceived for shinier finishings with a clean total closure of the cuticule. For the brushing we will use the same technique as with the racket brush (watch tutorial). As the brush is made out of aluminium, it keeps and distributes the heat across its base, obtaining faster and more defined results
Skeleton hairbrush
The “skeleton” works with all types of hair. In curly hair, the skeleton defines better the curls; In thick hair the skeleton brush glides very well through the hair thanks to its wide-spaced bristles; in short hair, it provides volume and helps to better card the hair. Moreover, due to the low number of bristles it has, the brush is very easy to clean.
Natural boar hairbrush
The natural boar hairbrush is conceived to polish the hair, for example when tying it back. It is also beneficial for the scalp as it stimulates the blood flow and the even distribution of fat across the hair. It should be used on dry hair (this way humidity doesn’t damage its fibres) and it works perfectly well with thick hair.
Hairbrush for extensions
This brush combines wide flexible bristles with wild boar ones. Thanks to this property it is ideal for hair with extensions as well as for beards or facial hair, because the combination of different bristle lengths provides brightness but also give volume to the hair, and untangles it. It also works for medium length hair, although it can also be used for other types of hair.It should also be used upon dry hair to avoid deterioration.
Nylon hair brush
The nylon brush is ideal to untangle dry thin hair because its nylon fibres are finer and also have different lengths. This encourages a better grip of the hair.
