8 reasons to invest in high quality scissors

Cutting shears and thinning scissors are the most important tools in the life of a hairdresser. The decision of investing in higher or lower quality professional scissors is nevertheless not so clear given the wide spectrum of models, materials and existing prices. How much different will be my work? Which aspects do I need to consider when choosing my tool? Termix gives answer to these questions in 8 key aspects, sorted out according to their importance, so that you can make the right choice of professional scissors.

  1. Alloy

It refers to the coating of the material out of which the scissors are made. The coating determines the price or value of the scissors. The best ones are made out of stainless steel covered with a metal alloy of cobalt, chromium or molybdenum which provide a high degree of hardness and resistance to corrosion. Investing in a scissor with poor quality steel causes a short and limited performance, as well as the impossibility of sharpening and greater effort.

2. Ergonomics

If we want to work comfortably, it is very important that the scissors are ergonomic, or in other words, that the tool adapts to the person and not the other way around. As we use them extensively daily, this is a prerequisite. But it will also suit the taste and comfort of each person.

3. Sharpening

The performance of the cutting, safety and profitability are directly related to the quality of the sharpening of the scissors. A poor quality cutting tool or blades force a strain which could lead over time to injuries of arm, wrist, back… It is directly related to the material of manufacture. (Point 1). Sometimes we could have such a sharp blade that we could shave with it. The scissors can receive laser treatments (ideal for irregular cut) or micro-serrated (for accurate cuts, because it avoids that the hair glides across the blade).

4. Blade adjustment

It is important that they have a blade adjustment: a visible screw, readily available with its master key included in the package (as well as oil and a cloth for cleaning). The following link provides you with the necessary information to correctly adjust the blades and lengthen their useful life.

5. Precision

The precision of the cut will depend on the two previous points, that is, on the blade and correct adjustment of the screw. If we use high quality materials we will achieve greater precision in the haircut.

6. Handmade

If they are handmade their quality will always be higher. They have a revision unit which prevents any manufacturing error in blades or rings and also guarantees that they meet the requirements of the manufacturing process.

7. Weight

The scissors should be light. This property will make the scissors easier to use and will also ease the haircut.

8. Inches

This is the unit that we use to measure the scissors. An inch stands for 2.5 cm. The size usually varies from 4” (10 cm) to 8” (20 cm), although canine hairdressers use over 7”.

Generally, small sizes will be used for female haircuts while bigger ones will be used for male ones.

The average size for all kinds of haircuts ranges from 5” and 6.5”, although this is no gold standard. What matters is to feel comfortable working with them and to choose the one that best adapts to your hand.

We must never forget though, that their useful life will also depend on their maintenance. We should keep them in a safe place where they are not damaged by other materials and we should try to avoid that they fall to the ground. Termix advises you to put them back in the case after their use or just cover the blade with a protecting cover.
